MWOS Employee Robbed of Over US$2,000 After Falling Victim to “Chadonha” Scam

A MWOS Betting House employee from Ngezi was robbed of more than US$2,000 by suspected members of the notorious “Chadonha” syndicate in Harare after being lured by a fake bundle of United States dollars.

The incident reportedly occurred on Africa Day while the employee was on his way to deliver company cash to the betting company’s headquarters in the capital.

Tricked Along Robert Mugabe Way

According to police, Abraham Pambayi had travelled from Turf in Ngezi carrying US$1,200 meant for delivery to the MWOS Betting House offices in Harare’s central business district.

Pambayi reportedly got off a kombi at Robert Mugabe Square at around 9:30am before proceeding on foot along Robert Mugabe Way.

As he neared the Rotten Row area, he allegedly encountered one of the suspects who appeared to “discover” a bundle of cash on the ground in front of him.

The suspect then convinced Pambayi that they should go elsewhere to divide the money between themselves.

Syndicate Strikes in Kopje Area

Police say the pair walked towards the Kopje area, where they were joined by several other men believed to be part of the same syndicate.

The suspects allegedly surrounded Pambayi and forcibly took cash amounting to US$2,040 from his jacket before fleeing from the scene.

The stolen money reportedly included both company funds and personal cash.

Police Investigating Robbery

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident and warned members of the public to be cautious of strangers using tricks involving supposed “found money”.

We are investigating a plain robbery case. The complainant was tricked and lost a total amount of US$2,040,” said Insp Chakanza.

Police investigations into the robbery are still underway.
