New Details Emerge on Guruve Serial Killer After Arrest
Fresh details have emerged about Anymore Zvitsva, the suspected Guruve serial killer whose arrest on Saturday brought an end to a nationwide manhunt that had gripped Zimbabwe since December 2025.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the 32-year-old fugitive was shot and captured during a joint security operation in Guruve on the afternoon of 3 January 2026.

Dramatic Arrest Ends Weeks-Long Manhunt
Zvitsva’s arrest followed weeks of intensive searches involving multiple security agencies after a string of brutal killings in Guruve and surrounding areas. Police said the operation to apprehend him was met with resistance, resulting in him being shot before he was taken into custody.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact charges he will face, but investigations are continuing as more information comes to light.
Troubled Childhood and Life on the Margins
Villagers describe Zvitsva as a long-standing troublemaker whose life was shaped by hardship and neglect. Born to a notorious thief known locally as “Fresher,” Zvitsva and his siblings never attended school and instead grew up in the bush, surviving through hunting, stealing and foraging.
After the deaths of both parents, the children were placed under the care of their grandmother. While some of his siblings later managed to reintegrate into society, Zvitsva became increasingly isolated.
“We have known him since he was a kid; together with his siblings they were raised in the jungle by their parents. I believe his problems stem from a messed-up upbringing, and as he grew older, he started stealing just like his father,” said villager Tinei Gweshe.
Growing Fear Within the Community
Over the years, Zvitsva reportedly became a figure feared within the community. Residents say many people avoided him, while elders were reluctant to intervene when disputes arose.
A former neighbour, Sarudzai, said his alleged methods during the killings mirrored his past criminal behaviour.
“Whenever he entered a compound to steal, he would tie doors to trap people inside. That is exactly what was happening in these murders,” she said.
Return to Guruve and Alleged Family Assistance
Zvitsva is believed to have returned to Guruve earlier this year after completing a two-year prison sentence. Residents say he was often seen barefoot, poorly dressed and carrying a solar-powered radio, which he allegedly used to keep track of developments in the manhunt.
Police have also taken several of his relatives into custody, including his 107-year-old grandmother, on allegations that they assisted him while he was on the run.
Niece Recounts Threats and Warning Signs
Reason, Zvitsva’s niece, said she is now responsible for her grandmother’s home after losing her mother, siblings and nieces—who were among the first five victims of the killing spree.
“He killed my mother because she attempted to reprimand him for his behaviour. He threatened her and said he would come for her blood,” she said.
She also described his physical traits, which she said made him difficult to apprehend.
“He now has a scar on his face, and he is a very fast runner. That explains why villagers failed to catch him the many times he was spotted,” she said.
