Orlando Pirates could waste little time during the January transfer window. Leading reporter Sinethemba Makonco revealed the club has closed a deal for Andre de Jong.
The Buccaneers reportedly secured the player from Stellenbosch FC. The transfer window officially opened on 1 January. Therefore, an official announcement may arrive sooner rather than later.
Pirates Finally Win the Race for De Jong
Orlando Pirates worked on the deal for several months. Previously, the club failed to sign the Stellenbosch FC midfielder in September.
However, Pirates now appear to have won the race for the 29-year-old New Zealander. De Jong brings valuable Premier Soccer League experience. He has registered eight goals and 11 assists in 113 league appearances.
What De Jong Adds to the Buccaneers Attack
This season, De Jong has recorded three goals and one assist in 22 matches. Last season, he delivered eight goals and five assists in 47 appearances. However, his impact extends beyond statistics. He is known as an intelligent and selfless attacking midfielder.
Moreover, he works tirelessly, creates space, and improves attacking balance. His career includes spells in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Locally, he played for AmaZulu and Royal AM.
Overall, he boasts 69 goals and 37 assists in 260 senior matches. Competition will be intense at Orlando Stadium. He will challenge Sipho Mbule, Patrick Maswanganyi, and Kabelo Dlamini.
Additionally, Relebohile Mofokeng has featured centrally at times. Nevertheless, De Jong’s movement and work rate offer a different attacking option. As a result, Pirates gain a fresh dimension entering the decisive phase.
