Pitso Mosimane has explained why Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates dominate his latest Bafana Bafana squad.
The coach spoke ahead of South Africa’s meeting with Guinea. He also addressed concerns about the heavy club representation.
Sundowns provide 13 players in the squad, while Pirates have six representatives. Together, they form a significant part of Mosimane’s selection.
Mosimane Defends Sundowns Representation
Mosimane believes Sundowns’ squad presence reflects their performances on the domestic stage.
The Pretoria club recently added another trophy to its collection. They also remain among the leading teams in the Betway Premiership.
Therefore, Mosimane said their players deserved serious consideration for national-team selection.
“Those are the ones who win the trophy last week, right? And those are the ones who are also top of their log. So you have to respect that,” Mosimane said.
The coach also discussed the competition for places across several positions.
At left-back, Aubrey Modiba faces competition from Fawaaz Basadien. Basadien has become a regular after establishing himself at Sundowns.
Mosimane believes regular club football has helped Basadien improve his international chances.
He also acknowledged the unusual concentration of goalkeepers from one club. However, he rejected the idea of selecting players simply to create club balance.
Instead, Mosimane wants his selections to reflect performances and positional needs.
Pirates Also Provide Major Bafana Representation
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates have also supplied several important players to the national team.
The Buccaneers have six players in Mosimane’s squad for the Guinea fixture. Their presence underlines the quality within South Africa’s leading clubs.
Mosimane suggested that national-team selections naturally reflect where top performers are playing.
He also touched on possible player movements between clubs. At one point, he joked about being relieved that a particular transfer never happened.
The coach would prefer to see similar depth across every position. However, he cannot control which clubs produce the strongest players.
For now, Mosimane’s attention turns towards Guinea.
The West African side has quality players who can test Bafana Bafana. Consequently, South Africa will need strong performances from its leading club representatives.
Sundowns and Pirates have supplied much of the squad. Now, those players must help Mosimane achieve the desired result.
