South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has intensified calls for the removal of sanctions against Zimbabwe, citing mounting global economic pressures.
Ramaphosa, who chairs the Southern African Development Community (SADC), reaffirmed the regional bloc’s support for Zimbabwe’s economic recovery.
He made the remarks in a statement commemorating SADC Anti-Sanctions Day on 25 October 2026.
The annual event highlights the regional organisation’s campaign against restrictions imposed on Zimbabwe.
This year’s commemorations run under the theme, “Leveraging Regional Integration and Global Partnerships for Economic Transformation Beyond Illegal Sanctions”.
Ramaphosa argued that the restrictions create additional economic challenges for Zimbabwe as geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty increase.
SADC Pushes for Sanctions to Be Removed
The South African leader stressed that SADC would continue pressing for the complete removal of the sanctions.
He also maintained that their impact extends beyond Zimbabwe, affecting the region’s broader integration and development ambitions.
“SADC remains resolute in calling for the complete lifting of sanctions against the Republic of Zimbabwe and will pursue this cause with the utmost commitment, in the true spirit of regionalism and collective regional integration,” he said.
Ramaphosa emphasised that regional cooperation should help every member state achieve shared economic progress.
He warned that restrictions against one country could undermine collective efforts to strengthen prosperity across the region.
Ramaphosa Urges Dialogue to End Restrictions
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa called on countries responsible for imposing the sanctions to pursue dialogue with Zimbabwe.
He said constructive engagement could help create conditions for the restrictions to be lifted.
According to the SADC chairperson, removing the sanctions would give Zimbabwe greater room to advance its economic and social development goals.
He also highlighted the need to improve living standards and expand opportunities for Zimbabweans.
The annual Anti-Sanctions Day remains an important platform for SADC to demonstrate solidarity with Zimbabwe.
Through the commemorations, the regional bloc continues advocating for the unconditional removal of sanctions and stronger regional partnerships.
