Police in the Midlands have arrested two men in separate murder cases following violent disputes over minor disagreements. One argument reportedly started over a cigarette lighter, while the other involved a pool token.
Shurugwi man arrested after deadly lighter dispute
A 30-year-old Shurugwi man is facing a murder charge after allegedly killing another man during an argument over a cigarette lighter.
The fatal incident happened on Sunday evening at Sherekete Business Centre under Chief Nhema in Shurugwi.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident to the Masvingo Mirror.
Mahoko said John Maketo allegedly asked Chamunorwa Mudzingwa for a lighter. However, Mudzingwa reportedly refused to hand it over.
The refusal allegedly sparked a violent confrontation.
Maketo allegedly struck Mudzingwa twice with a machete, targeting his head and face.
Mudzingwa sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Police later tracked down and arrested Maketo on the same day.
Mberengwa fight over pool token ends in tragedy
In a separate case, police arrested Tapiwa Murozvi Moyo, 29, from Village 2 in Mberengwa, over another alleged murder.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Green Span Business Centre in Mberengwa.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the two men, who shared the surname Moyo, were related.
Police said Tapiwa Murozvi Moyo allegedly clashed with Takunda Moyo during a dispute over a pool token.
The disagreement quickly escalated into a fistfight.
Although other patrons attempted to intervene, they failed to stop the violence.
During the confrontation, Murozvi allegedly picked up a brick and struck Takunda Moyo on the head.
The victim collapsed immediately and died at the scene.
Police arrested the suspect the following day.
Inspector Mahoko urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully instead of turning to violence.
“Once again, members of the public are called upon to always seek amicable solutions to disputes to avoid committing criminal offences and to save lives,” said Mahoko.
