RTG Expands Solar Investment with 2MW Project at Rainbow Towers
Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG) is set to roll out a major solar energy project at the Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre as part of its growing commitment to sustainability and cost efficiency.
The group plans to install a 2-megawatt solar system at the flagship property, marking a significant step in its long-term strategy to integrate renewable energy across its operations.
Building on Kadoma Success
RTG’s latest move follows the success of its solar plant at Kadoma Hotel and Conference Centre, which generated over 270,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy in the past year.
According to board chairperson Douglas Hoto, the initiative resulted in a 31 percent reduction in energy costs, highlighting the financial and environmental benefits of investing in renewable energy.
New Solar Plant to Feed National Grid
The upcoming Rainbow Towers installation is expected to produce nearly 3 million kilowatt-hours annually. The system will be grid-tied, allowing excess power to be channelled into the national grid.
Hoto said the project not only strengthens the company’s energy resilience but also contributes to broader national efforts to improve electricity supply.
Sustainability at the Core
RTG says sustainability remains central to its operations, with environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles embedded across its business.
The group’s “Green Stays” programme has already delivered measurable reductions in energy, water and chemical usage, while refurbishment projects now incorporate water-saving technologies and smart energy systems to improve efficiency.
Investment in Employees and Communities
Beyond environmental efforts, RTG continues to invest in its workforce and surrounding communities.
The company’s Employer Assisted Housing Scheme has benefited more than half of its employees, with plans to expand coverage further. Meanwhile, community initiatives received funding amounting to three percent of the group’s profit after tax, supporting health institutions and orphanages across Zimbabwe.
Strong Financial Performance
RTG reported solid growth in its 2025 financial year, with revenue rising by 13 percent to US$50.3 million. Total assets also increased significantly, driven by strategic acquisitions including properties in Nyanga, Victoria Falls and Cape Town.
Occupancy levels improved alongside gains in average room rates and revenue per available room, reflecting stronger demand across its hospitality portfolio.
Strategic Focus on Efficiency
Chief executive Tendai Madziwanyika said the group’s investment in renewable energy is a deliberate move to cut costs and reduce its carbon footprint.
He added that initiatives such as smart energy management systems and water-saving technologies are being integrated across operations to ensure sustainability becomes a practical reality within the business.
