Sean Williams Reveals Why He Pulled Out Of T20 World Cup Qualifiers
Former Zimbabwe captain Sean Williams has opened up about the personal struggles that led him to withdraw from the national team’s T20 World Cup qualifiers in 2025, revealing that substance abuse issues had begun to take a serious toll on his life.
Williams, one of Zimbabwe’s most decorated cricketers, said he eventually reached a point where stepping away from the game and seeking professional help was necessary to protect his family and personal wellbeing.

A Decision Away From Cricket
Williams pulled out of Zimbabwe’s squad shortly before the 2025 T20 World Cup qualifiers in Harare, a decision that came as a surprise given the importance of the tournament.
Speaking exclusively to SportsCast, the 40-year-old stressed that his decision was not prompted by problems within the national team or with Zimbabwe Cricket.
“My decision to pull out of the squad for the qualifiers in 2025 was a personal decision,” Williams said.
“It had nothing to do with the team, nothing to do with Zimbabwe Cricket. It was all based on myself and my current space at that time.”
‘My Life Was Falling Apart’-Sean Williams
The former all-rounder said his struggles outside cricket had become increasingly difficult to manage, despite his career on the field remaining in good shape.
He acknowledged that substance-related problems had reached a stage where he could no longer put off dealing with them.
“Substance issues was something that needed to be taken care of immediately. It couldn’t go any longer. I can’t hide that stuff, you need to be honest about it. That was the reason behind it,” he said.
Williams said his personal circumstances had deteriorated to the extent that he had to reassess his priorities.
“My life was falling apart around me. The cricket was good, but outside it, it wasn’t.
“I said to myself, family first.”
Rehabilitation Became The Next Step
After leaving the squad, Williams entered a rehabilitation programme in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands as he sought to address his substance abuse problems.
He said going into rehabilitation was, at that point, the only realistic way of breaking the cycle and making meaningful changes in his life.
“Going into rehab from there was the only decision I could make at that time, otherwise nothing was going to change,” he said.
His decision to seek treatment ultimately brought his two-decade international career to an abrupt end.
Williams Praises Rehab Experience
Despite the difficult circumstances that led him there, Williams said he looks back positively on his time at the rehabilitation facility.
He spoke warmly about the environment and the people who supported him during the process, saying he would not hesitate to return.
