Second suspect arrested over EFF member Monica Dube

A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of Economic Freedom Fighters member Monica Dube. The latest arrest could provide investigators with fresh leads in the high-profile killing. Dube served as the EFF secretary for Tshwane Sub-Region 2.

She was shot dead at her home in Wallmannsthal, Pretoria, in June. Her family members were reportedly present when the attackers entered the property.

Police make breakthrough in Dube murder investigation

The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team arrested the second suspect on Monday, 6 October. Police reportedly linked the 39-year-old suspect to Dube’s killing through an intelligence-driven investigation. The arrest comes several months after investigators detained the first suspect. Sipho Lucky Mahlangu was arrested in July and later abandoned his bail application.

Investigators accuse Mahlangu of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Dube’s daughter reportedly recognised him at a taxi rank after the killing. She then alerted the police, which led to his arrest.

According to police, Mahlangu and another suspect allegedly targeted Dube’s home. The pair allegedly entered the property during the early hours of 13 June. They reportedly went into Dube’s bedroom before shooting her.

The suspects allegedly fled the scene with her cellphone after the attack. The latest arrest could therefore help police establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing.

EFF welcomes second arrest

The EFF in Gauteng has welcomed the latest development in the investigation. The party also praised the Political Killings Task Team for pursuing those allegedly involved. The EFF has consistently argued that Dube’s killing involved more than one person.

“From the beginning, the EFF has maintained that the murder of fighter Monica Dube could not have been the work of one individual acting alone. The circumstances surrounding her assassination demanded that investigators pursue every person who participated in, facilitated or may have orchestrated the killing,” the EFF said.

The party described the second arrest as an important development.

It said the investigation must now establish what happened before, during and after Dube’s death.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court in Pretoria.

The court appearance could provide further details about the charges against the accused.

Meanwhile, investigators continue working to establish the full chain of events behind Dube’s murder.
