Spanish Footballer Jesús de Miguel Dies After Horror On-Pitch Collision With Goalkeeper

Spanish football has been plunged into mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a collision during a league match on Monday.

The 30-year-old was rushed to hospital after a clash with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in the closing moments of their Segunda División encounter. Although he was initially reported to be in a stable condition, his health deteriorated overnight.

Tenerife confirmed his death on Tuesday, prompting emotional tributes from his club, former teammates and football teams across Spain and beyond.

Collision Brings Match to a Halt

The incident happened near the halfway line as De Miguel chased the ball towards the end of the match.

Owono had moved well outside his goal to clear the ball when he collided with the Tenerife forward at speed. The goalkeeper was immediately shown a red card for the challenge.

After realising the seriousness of the situation, Owono returned to check on De Miguel, who had remained motionless on the pitch.

Medical personnel attended to the striker, and players from both teams appeared visibly distressed as he received treatment. The match was subsequently abandoned with only minutes remaining.

Condition Deteriorates Overnight

De Miguel was taken directly to hospital, where initial reports indicated that he was stable despite the severity of his injuries.

However, Tenerife later revealed that his neurological condition had deteriorated overnight before confirming that he had died on Tuesday morning.

The club expressed its devastation in a statement, saying there were no words to ease the pain of losing the player.

“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true,” Tenerife said.

The club added that it stood with De Miguel’s family, friends and supporters as they struggled to come to terms with the loss.
