It’s the start of a new month, 1 April, and a cheeky prank caught Springbok fans off guard.
An article claimed Rassie Erasmus had signed a multi-year deal with England. It suggested he would replace Steve Borthwick as head coach.
However, the story was clearly an April Fool’s Day joke. Still, many fans reacted seriously in the comments.
The article even added humour. It claimed Erasmus would resign on April Fool’s Day. It also joked: “Personal reasons are also believed to have played a role, with Rassie’s beloved bulldog, Frank, keen to return to his roots in Britain.”
Erasmus responds to confusion
Meanwhile, some fans believed the story and panicked. As a result, Erasmus received concerned messages. He quickly responded on social media. He posted a short reminder that it was “1 April”.
Fans reacted immediately. One user said: “I almost fainted. Thank you.” Another added: “Is this an April fools joke? because I am about to flatline!”
No changes for Springboks
In reality, there is nothing to worry about. Erasmus remains committed to the Springboks.
He has extended his contract until 2031. Previously, he served as Director of Rugby from 2018.
Under his leadership, South Africa won the Rugby World Cups in 2019 and 2023. Later, in 2024, he became head coach.
Since then, the team has won the Rugby Championship twice. They also finished three seasons as the world’s top-ranked team.
Erasmus confirmed his commitment. He said: “This was a quick and easy conversation to reach agreement. I have always said that I would find it hard to coach any other international team, and I’m very happy to continue as long as the South African public wants me,” Erasmus commented in a statement.
He also added: “I’d like to thank SA Rugby and the franchises for the support and backing they have given me and the Springboks over the past few years. It hasn’t always been easy but we’re improving. Although this a long-term agreement we’re not looking beyond a really tough 2026 schedule right now.”
