Star FM DJ And Comedian Babongile Sikhonjwa Dies Suddenly At 49

The entertainment industry is in mourning following the sudden death of beloved Star FM DJ, comedian, and master of ceremonies Babongile Sikhonjwa. His family confirmed the tragic news on September 21, 2025. He was 49 years old.

The charismatic media personality, known for his infectious energy and unique style, had only joined the popular urban radio station Star FM in late 2023.

According to ZimLive, the Sikhonjwa family confirmed his passing but did not immediately provide details on the cause of death.

The announcement shocked fans across Zimbabwe, as Sikhonjwa had been a familiar and energetic voice on the airwaves and a regular feature in comedy and live events.

His journey to Star FM

Sikhonjwa joined Star FM in November 2023, following his departure from NRTV earlier that year. He quickly made his mark when he took over the After Drive show on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 6.30pm to 9pm, succeeding DJ Ollah 7, who had resigned on 13 November 2023.

In an interview with Sunday Life at the time, Sikhonjwa explained his excitement about joining the station, saying:

“I am going on the After Drive and yes I cannot deny that my predecessor (DJ Ollah 7) ended on a popular note. I will get there and do my thing… People should expect something different, definitely wild, crazy and absolutely entertaining and very different from anything that they have heard from radio before.”

Zimpapers Radio Division General Manager, Comfort Mbofana, described him in November 2023 as:

“A very entertaining, sharp and distinguished media personality and businessman who fits in well with the thrust of the radio station.”

A Bulawayo favourite

Before his move to Harare, Sikhonjwa was already well known in Bulawayo and across Zimbabwe’s showbiz scene. He had worked with Skyz Metro FM, Keyona TV, and later NRTV. Beyond radio and television, he built a reputation as a comedian and MC, becoming a fixture at shows and arts festivals.

Speaking in 2023, Sikhonjwa expressed pride in carrying Bulawayo’s arts and culture to the wider nation:

“I am taking Bulawayo style to the world, its music, arts and language. Maybe people from Harare will now understand Bulawayo people better when they are hearing one of them on the airwaves.”

His sudden death leaves a gap in both the comedy and broadcasting circles, with tributes expected to pour in from colleagues, fans, and the wider entertainment industry.
