President Mnangagwa’s Disaster Declaration Fast-Tracks Return Of Bus Crash Victims
The Government has moved swiftly to repatriate the bodies of 11 Zimbabweans who died in the devastating Munhenzva Transport Services bus crash in South Africa after President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the tragedy a State of Disaster. The declaration has unlocked emergency resources, with the victims’ physical identification set for Thursday, 6 August, before their remains are brought home.
The victims were among passengers travelling from Cape Town to Harare when the coach crashed near Trompsburg in South Africa’s Free State province on 31 July 2026. Authorities expect the bodies to arrive in Zimbabwe by Saturday following a memorial service.
State Of Disaster Unlocks Faster Repatriation Process
The Herald reports that the declaration, made under Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act, allows the Government to mobilise resources to repatriate the deceased, assist survivors and coordinate with South African authorities.
Zimbabwe’s Consul General in Johannesburg, Eria Phiri, said post-mortems had been completed and preparations were underway for the next stage.
“We expect to have the bodies in Zimbabwe by Saturday morning, and we are going to have a memorial service after the physical identification of our departed nationals in the Free State on Thursday.”
He also confirmed the breakdown of those who lost their lives.
“We have identified one male adult, five female adults, three female minors and two male minors among the deceased. The Government of Zimbabwe is facilitating the repatriations. We are grateful for the support from our host government. A total of 13 people are still in hospital — five are at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital and eight at Universitas Academic Hospital.”
Officials said the victims’ names will only be released after relatives complete the identification process.
Free State Bus Crash Left 11 Dead And Dozens Injured
The crash occurred on the N1 highway about 24 kilometres north of Trompsburg while the bus was travelling towards Zimbabwe.
Free State Department of Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said the coach was carrying about 78 passengers when it overturned.
“The identities and genders of the deceased are yet to be confirmed.”
At least 66 passengers survived and were taken to hospitals in Trompsburg and Bloemfontein. Five suffered serious injuries, while four were admitted in critical condition. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The State of Disaster declaration has accelerated the process of bringing the victims home, offering support to grieving families while officials in Zimbabwe and South Africa continue working together.
