Watch: Phathisani Sibanda Buys Brand-New Toyota Fortuner for US$100 After Zimpapers Gift Ban
Renowned radio personality Phathisani Sibanda has acquired a brand-new 2025 Toyota Fortuner GD6 for just US$100 after businessman Wicknell Chivayo converted a previously gifted vehicle into what he described as a “special deal”.
The development comes days after the Zimbabwe Newspapers Group reportedly directed employees at Capitalk FM to reject expensive gifts and cash handed out by Chivayo during his visit to the station.
Another female employee at the radio station also reportedly bought a Toyota Aqua for only US$50 under the same arrangement.

Zimpapers Reportedly Rejects Gifts
The controversy erupted after Chivayo initially gifted vehicles and cash to Capitalk FM staff as a gesture of appreciation.
However, Zimpapers management instructed employees in its radio division to surrender most of the money distributed during the visit, citing the organisation’s gift policy.
Reports indicated that Sibanda was told to either reject the vehicle upgrade or leave his job.
Zimpapers chief executive officer William Chikoto reportedly said the move was meant to ensure compliance with company policy, which bars employees from accepting gifts exceeding US$100 in value.
A company executive said the restrictions were intended to preserve editorial independence and avoid perceptions of bribery.
Chivayo Offers “Special Prices”
In response, Chivayo announced that the vehicles would instead be sold directly to the employees at heavily discounted prices.
He said the arrangement would allow the workers to obtain the cars independently without his direct involvement.
“If indeed what is being said is the policy of the radio station, I am pleased to advise that Madzibaba Chipaga of Enterprise Car Sales is apparently selling a brand new Toyota Fortuner 2.4D GD6 for ONLY USD100 and a Toyota Aqua for ONLY USD50,” Chivayo said.
“He has indicated that this is a special price applicable only to these two individuals.”
Chivayo added that the employees were free to purchase the vehicles themselves “without my involvement”.

On Wednesday, Chivayo shared a video showing Sibanda purchasing the luxury vehicle for US$100.
In the accompanying social media post, the businessman joked about securing “great deals” in Harare.
The post quickly attracted widespread attention online, with many Zimbabweans reacting to the unusually low prices attached to the vehicles.
