Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has sparked debate after gifting a vehicle to Susan Matsunga. The gesture followed her public praise of Emmerson Mnangagwa during a borehole commissioning event.
A Reward for “Political Maturity”
Chivayo framed the gift as recognition of “political maturity.” He argued that leaders must prioritise citizens over partisan loyalty. Furthermore, he criticised opposition politics for excessive polarisation and resistance to acknowledging government progress.
According to him, Zimbabwe has experienced visible development under ZANU PF leadership. He cited infrastructure projects and improvements in public services as examples. However, he claimed opposition figures often dismiss these achievements outright.
Matsunga stood out by publicly thanking the President for boreholes in Budiriro North. As a result, she faced criticism from some within her party, Citizens Coalition for Change. Despite this backlash, she maintained her stance, emphasising community benefits over political pressure.
Gift, Controversy, and Public Reaction
Chivayo rewarded Matsunga with a 2026 Toyota Fortuner and pledged US$50,000 for community projects. He insisted the gesture was not political inducement. Instead, he described it as appreciation for courage and service delivery.
Moreover, he encouraged leaders to recognise development regardless of its political source. He also reiterated that Zimbabwe remains a democracy where individuals choose their affiliations freely.
However, the gift has raised ethical and political questions. Critics argue such gestures may blur lines between appreciation and influence. Others believe it highlights a need for cooperation across political divides.
Ultimately, the incident reflects ongoing tensions in Zimbabwean politics. It also underscores the challenge of balancing loyalty, accountability, and development priorities.
