Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has stunned local football fans after honouring his promise to Dynamos F.C. despite their loss to CAPS United F.C. in the Harare Derby.
Before the highly anticipated clash, Chivayo promised Dynamos a brand-new bus if they defeated their rivals. However, CAPS United emerged victorious after a thrilling encounter that captivated Zimbabwean football supporters.
Despite the defeat, Chivayo has now decided to proceed with the donation. Furthermore, he pledged an additional US$50,000 to motivate the players after their spirited performance.
A Promise Beyond Results
In a lengthy Facebook statement, Chivayo defended his decision and praised Dynamos supporters for their loyalty. He explained that football should unite people rather than create hatred and division.
Moreover, he revealed that many of his close relatives and friends support Dynamos passionately. Therefore, he could not ignore the emotional connection attached to the club.
Chivayo described Dynamos as a household name in Zimbabwean football history. He also insisted that honouring promises should not depend on favourable outcomes.
“I refuse to reduce myself into someone who only stands by his word when circumstances are favourable,” wrote Chivayo.
Fans React to the Surprise Gesture
Meanwhile, the announcement has triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms. Some fans applauded Chivayo for keeping his word despite losing the bet. Others questioned why he changed the original conditions attached to the offer.
Nevertheless, Dynamos supporters celebrated the unexpected development enthusiastically. The club is expected to receive a brand-new 65-seater bus soon after completing registration procedures.
Additionally, Chivayo criticised people who mocked his earlier promise during the match. He claimed that his name receives greater respect outside Zimbabwe than at home.
Even so, the businessman maintained that his gesture was never sponsorship. Instead, he described it as appreciation for loyal supporters who filled the stadium.
