The Springboks have built remarkable player depth over several years. Coach Rassie Erasmus carefully developed multiple players for each position. Therefore, the team always has strong replacements ready.
However, many key Springboks now play their rugby overseas. Meanwhile, SA Rugby continues attracting some stars back home.
So, how would a fully South Africa-based Springbok side look today? Below is a possible starting lineup built from locally based players.
Powerful Forward Pack Built on Local Strength
First, the front row would remain world class and powerful. Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi, and Wilco Louw would form a dominant trio.
Alternatively, Frans Malherbe could start at tighthead prop. Next, Eben Etzebeth and Ruan Nortje would anchor the second row.
Meanwhile, Siya Kolisi would captain the side from the flank. He would join Elrigh Louw and Cameron Hanekom in a dynamic loose trio.
Together, they provide power, mobility, and strong breakdown presence.
Balanced Backline Mixing Youth and Experience
The backline selection becomes more complicated. Many first-choice Springbok backs currently play overseas.
At scrumhalf, Grant Williams offers speed and creativity. However, he will move to Japan next season.
Therefore, Morne van den Berg could start at number nine. At flyhalf, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu remains a strong option after an impressive season.
On the wings, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe provide pace and finishing ability. Meanwhile, Andre Esterhuizen anchors the midfield. He partners either Canan Moodie or Ethan Hooker.
Finally, Damian Willemse completes the lineup at fullback. Several regular Springboks miss out because they play overseas.
These include Cheslin Kolbe, Jesse Kriel, and Damian de Allende.
Others include Pieter-Steph du Toit, Malcolm Marx, RG Snyman, and Jasper Wiese.
Interestingly, both New Zealand national rugby union team and England national rugby union team refuse to select overseas-based players.
So the big question remains.
Could a locally based Springbok team still top the World Rugby rankings?
