Zimbabwe Police Launch Nationwide Crackdown on Plateless Vehicles and Illegal Blue Lights
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has begun a countrywide operation targeting vehicles moving on the roads without registration number plates as well as those fitted with unauthorized emergency gadgets such as sirens and blue lights.
Authorities say the exercise will be conducted across the country and applies to all types of vehicles, including private cars, company fleets, government vehicles and public transport.
Police say the operation is aimed at restoring order on the roads and preventing criminals from exploiting unregistered vehicles to evade identification.
Criminals Using Plateless Vehicles
Police expressed concern that some motorists are intentionally removing registration plates to avoid being traced after committing crimes.
According to the ZRP, plateless vehicles have been linked to serious offences including armed robberies, kidnappings and hit-and-run road accidents.
In addition, some drivers have reportedly been using vehicles without plates to escape penalties for traffic violations such as driving against the flow of traffic, ignoring red traffic lights and breaching lane rules.
Authorities also noted that some public service vehicles are removing number plates in order to avoid follow-ups after committing traffic offences, a practice that has in some cases contributed to road accidents.
Illegal Emergency Gadgets Cause Road Chaos
Police also raised alarm over the growing number of vehicles fitted with unauthorized gadgets including sirens, blue lights, bar lights and beacons.
These devices are reserved exclusively for authorized emergency vehicles such as ambulances and police units.
Officials warned that the misuse of such equipment creates confusion on the roads and can endanger other motorists. Bar lights, in particular, have been cited as a hazard at night because they can interfere with the vision of other drivers.
Impoundments and On-the-Spot Action
The ZRP said vehicles found without number plates will be impounded immediately. They will only be released after owners complete the proper registration process and ensure that number plates are fitted.
Police also warned that any illegal sirens, blue lights or similar gadgets found on vehicles will be removed on the spot without exception.
Public Urged to Ignore Leaked Document
Meanwhile, the police have urged the public to disregard a document circulating on social media regarding the operation.
Authorities said the document was leaked by an individual who attended a commanders’ meeting and does not represent official communication.
The ZRP stressed that all updates related to the ongoing operation will be issued through its official channels and encouraged motorists to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure safety and order on the country’s roads.
