The Government of Zimbabwe has announced that it is closely monitoring the prices and availability of essential goods to protect consumer purchasing power. Authorities made the remarks at a post-Cabinet media briefing held on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, where they emphasised the importance of ensuring basic goods remain affordable and accessible.
Government Statement On Price Stability
According to the statement released after the Cabinet meeting, the current monetary and fiscal environment has been a key factor. Officials highlighted that exchange rate stability and improved market discipline have contributed to better access to essential products such as mealie-meal, bread, sugar, rice, cooking oil, eggs, beef, chicken and soap.
The Cabinet stated:
“The stability observed in commodity prices, coupled with adequate stock levels across most retail outlets, reflects growing alignment between regulatory enforcement and private sector interests.”
Authorities further explained that inspections are being conducted across all provinces by the Task Force on Business Malpractices. These operations are designed to maintain fair trading practices and ensure compliance with regulations.
Business Community Feedback
The Government said that positive responses have been received from retailers regarding the situation. Formal traders reported increased sales volumes, attributing this to fair trading and improved consumer confidence.
The statement read:
“Cabinet acknowledges the positive feedback from the business community, with formal retail operators reporting higher sales volumes.”
Officials added that these outcomes reflect stronger cooperation between Government enforcement measures and private sector operations.
Action Against Substandard Goods
During the briefing, it was also revealed that substandard goods identified during market inspections have been confiscated and destroyed.
Authorities stressed that such action was necessary to protect consumers.
“Enhanced compliance, fair trading practices and improved market discipline promoted by the Task Force on Business Malpractices continue to drive progress,” the Cabinet said.
The Government assured citizens that it will remain vigilant to safeguard the public against unfair practices and shortages.
