Mthuli Ncube Reveals Cost Of Helping Zimbabweans Return From South Africa

Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube says the Zimbabwean government has spent US$4.8 million (about R79.2 million) helping citizens who have returned from South Africa. Presenting the 2026 Mid-Term Budget and Economic Review in Parliament on 30 July 2026, Ncube said more than 150,000 Zimbabweans have returned since the migration crisis began.

Mthuli Ncube Details Returnee Reintegration Programme

Presenting the Mid-Term Budget, Ncube said the government is implementing a Returnee Reintegration and Economic Empowerment Programme to help returning citizens rebuild their lives.

He said:

“The Government is implementing a Returnee Reintegration and Economic Empowerment Programme aimed at facilitating the orderly reintegration of returnees into their communities, while leveraging their skills, experience and entrepreneurial capabilities to drive inclusive economic growth.”

Ncube added that Treasury had already released US$4.8 million (about R79.2 million) for humanitarian operations.

“So far, Government has responded by availing US$4.8 million towards humanitarian operations to facilitate the safe and dignified return of affected citizens.”

More Than 150,000 Zimbabweans Have Returned

Ncube said government figures show that more than 150,000 Zimbabweans have returned from South Africa since the migration crisis began.

He said the reintegration programme is designed to support returnees as they settle back into their communities while making use of their skills, work experience and entrepreneurial abilities to contribute to economic growth.
