Zimbabwe Woman Jailed For 10 Years After 4-Year-Old Dies Following Razor Blade Tongue Cut
A 43-year-old woman from Mberengwa has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after a child died following a traditional procedure she performed to address an alleged speech problem.
Chipiwa Majasi, of Village 3, Kugutakurima under Chief Mposi, was convicted of culpable homicide by the High Court sitting in Gweru.
Two years of her sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving her with an effective eight-year prison term.

Child Dies After Procedure
The case arose from an incident on March 5 involving Ruvarashe Mafikeni.
According to the court proceedings, the child was at Runyararo Complex in Vanguard, Mberengwa, when her mother invited Majasi to the family home.
Majasi had been called to carry out a traditional procedure intended to address the child’s speech problem.
During the procedure, she used a razor blade to cut the lower membrane of Ruvarashe’s tongue.
Majasi then left the home.
Child Later Found Without Signs Of Life
Ruvarashe subsequently fell asleep.
At around 2pm, she was found without signs of life and was taken to Mberengwa District Hospital.
Medical staff pronounced the child dead.
The death was then reported to the police, leading to Majasi’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.
High Court Hands Down Sentence
Following her conviction for culpable homicide, the High Court sentenced Majasi to 10 years imprisonment.
However, two years were suspended on condition that she maintains good behaviour, meaning she will serve eight years behind bars.
