Five Appear Before Mbare Magistrate

Shinsoman (37) appeared before Mbare magistrate Ranga Gakanje yesterday together with Themba Sibanda (26), Shumba Tendai (43), Kennedy Simbanegavi (37) and Cosmas Muzanzi (41). All five admitted to the offence.

According to The Herald,  the court fined each of the accused US$200 or four months’ imprisonment in default of payment.

Suspended Jail Term Issued

In addition to the fine, magistrate Gakanje imposed a three-month prison sentence, which was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The suspended sentence will remain effective provided the men are not convicted again for smoking mbanje during that period.

Arrest in Highfield

According to the State, the five men reside at the same house in Engineering, Highfield, Harare.

On January 5, at around 6:30 pm, detectives conducting a follow-up investigation spotted the group standing near a parked Mercedes-Benz and passing around a hand-rolled cigarette. Suspecting it to be a mbanje joint, the officers approached the men.

Joint Seized, Accused Arrested

Upon confrontation, the group reluctantly surrendered the cigarette, which was confirmed to contain mbanje. The joint was seized from Shinsoman, leading to the arrest of all five suspects.

They were taken to the CID Drugs and Narcotics Department for further investigations before appearing in court.
