ZIMRA Stops Luxury Vehicles In Harare As Dubious Ownership Probe Intensifies

Luxury Car Owners Stopped As Authorities Probe Dubious Vehicle Ownership In Harare

Authorities are stopping luxury and high-value vehicles in Harare as part of an ongoing operation to verify whether they are legally in the country and properly documented.

The operation, which attracted significant public attention on 12 June 2026, has seen vehicles being pulled over in several parts of the capital, including Enterprise Road, Lomagundi Road and Belgravia. According to ZiFM Stereo News, the exercise is believed to involve the Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS) and other stakeholders amid concerns about vehicle smuggling, abuse of import permits and suspected document fraud.

Witnesses quoted in the report claimed that officials appeared to be focusing primarily on expensive vehicles.

Authorities Investigating Vehicle Imports And Documentation

The operation is reportedly centred on verifying the legality of imported vehicles and the authenticity of their paperwork.

Authorities are believed to be investigating possible vehicle smuggling schemes in which vehicles enter Zimbabwe without being properly declared through customs procedures.

Concerns have also been raised over the alleged abuse of Temporary Importation Permits (TIPs), which allow foreign-registered vehicles to enter the country temporarily. The permits are not intended for permanent use within Zimbabwe.

The report stated:

“Authorities are stopping luxury vehicles in Harare to verify whether they are in the country legally and properly documented.”

It added:

“The operation has been going on for days, with authorities believed to be involving the Vehicle Theft Squad (VTS) and other stakeholders.”

Investigators are also reportedly looking into allegations that customs clearance documents and vehicle registration papers may have been forged to illegally obtain local number plates.

Social Media Users Debate What Qualifies As A Luxury Vehicle

The operation quickly sparked debate on X, with some users questioning the classification of certain vehicles as luxury cars.

The account @gc_in_context wrote:

“Ummm a GD6 is a luxury vehicle???”

The user added:

“Those are utility vehicles that are designed for technicians and engineers, hakuna luxury vehicle ine backpan yekutakura huni kana chibage! (there is no luxury vehicle with a loading tray for carrying firewood or maize).”

The same account also argued:

“There is no luxury vehicle going for less than US$100,000 (approximately R1.65 million).”

Others suggested authorities should pay closer attention to processes at the country’s entry points.

User @Kaseke65195975 commented:

“The main culprits who are Zimra officers who assess vehicles at the borders are having the last laugh whilst vehicle owners are being harassed.”

Meanwhile, @TuChelsea12 appeared to suggest that the operation could be linked to the alleged abuse of temporary import permits.

As of Friday, 12 June 2026, authorities had not publicly released detailed information regarding the number of vehicles inspected or whether any arrests had been made.
