Not easy money: Tough hurdles block Orlando Pirates’ R27 million payday

Orlando Pirates have already earned over R20 million this season. They secured three trophies and competed in the CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, the Betway Premiership and Nedbank Cup remain within reach. Therefore, the Sea Robbers can still add more trophies and prize money.

Currently, the Buccaneers sit first in the Betway Premiership after 16 matches. On Wednesday, they face their toughest test against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Notably, the teams have met three times this season. However, all those encounters ended in draws.

Can Pirates Push Earnings Beyond R20 Million?

Winning the Betway Premiership would earn the Buccaneers R20 million. The club last won the league in 2012. Back then, winners received about R10 million.

Pirates remain in the Nedbank Cup after reaching the round of 16. Over the past three years, they reached three straight finals and won two.

If they win both the league and Nedbank Cup, Orlando Pirates will earn R27 million. Consequently, their seasonal earnings could approach R50 million.

Player Sales and Awards Boost Club Finances

With the PSL Awards approaching, several Pirates stars could win big. Relebohile Mofokeng, Oswin Appollis, and Lebone Seema impressed this season.

Additionally, the Sea Robbers benefited from major player sales. Mbekezeli Mbokazi left for nearly R50 million. Mohau Nkota was also sold for a similar fee.

Earlier this season, the Buccaneers lifted the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup.
