Shauwn Mkhize’s Club in Trouble After Fans Attack Referee in Eswatini

Shauwn Mkhize’s club, Mbabane Highlanders AM, could face heavy sanctions after furious supporters stormed the pitch and attacked the referee following a dramatic cup defeat on Sunday.

The incident occurred during an Ingwenyama Cup Round of 16 clash at the Mavuso Sports Centre, where Highlanders were beaten 1-0 by Nsingizini Hotspurs.

Last-Gasp Goal Sparks Chaos

The match had been an ill-tempered affair before it erupted into mayhem deep into stoppage time. Nsingizini scored a dramatic late winner to seal the tie, a goal that enraged sections of the home crowd.

Supporters claimed the referee had unfairly extended added time, allowing the decisive strike. Moments after the goal, fans invaded the pitch, chasing and assaulting the match official before security personnel intervened.

Reports later surfaced on the club’s Facebook page alleging that some supporters sustained rubber bullet injuries as authorities moved to restore order.

Disciplinary Action Looms

Highlanders are now bracing for disciplinary action over their fans’ conduct, with severe penalties expected from football authorities in Eswatini.

In a statement released on Facebook, the club expressed disappointment over the chaotic scenes that overshadowed the match.

“A day that began with colour, noise and all the hallmarks of a classic cup tie at Mavuso Sports Centre ended in deeply worrying and disappointing circumstances.

“The closing scenes fell short of the standards expected of the game and cast a shadow over what should have been a celebration of football.

“We now await further guidance from the relevant authorities on the way forward,” the club said.

The fallout from the incident is expected to dominate discussions in Eswatini football circles as authorities assess the extent of sanctions that may follow.
