Court Hears How Bystander Died During Gwanda Livestock Slaughter
A formal charge of culpable homicide has been instituted against a 61-year-old man following a tragic incident in which a shotgun blast intended for a charging bull fatally struck a bystander during a livestock slaughter in the Lushongwe area.
Dumisani Nyathi appeared before the Gwanda Magistrates Court on Monday, 24 February 2026, where the State outlined the circumstances surrounding the death of 47-year-old Butholezwe Sibanda. The magistrate remanded Nyathi in custody as legal proceedings continue.
Incident Details and Court Proceedings
Zimlive reports that ccording to the National Prosecuting Authority, the fatal incident occurred on 21 February 2026 in the Lushongwe area of Gwanda district. Court documents indicate that Khonzani Sibanda, a local butcher, travelled to Thuli Farm in Makwe to procure a bull, which was then transported to Lushongwe for slaughter.
The State alleges that Nyathi had been tasked with discharging a firearm to subdue the animal. Witness statements presented in court indicate that the bull had been secured to a tree with a rope but broke free and charged towards individuals who had gathered at the scene.
In the ensuing commotion, Nyathi, who was in possession of a shotgun, discharged a round at the approaching animal. The shot missed the bull and instead struck Butholezwe Sibanda in the chest.
The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that the victim sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. Medical authorities pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Family members of the deceased have been advised to prepare for ongoing investigations while awaiting further court directives. The accused remains in custody pending his next court appearance.
The Magistrates Court is expected to provide further direction on the matter as prosecutors continue to gather evidence and witness testimony.
