Henrietta Rushwaya, the president of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF), has once again found herself in legal trouble, this time for allegedly defrauding Dubai-based investors of US$1.5 million.
Rushwaya was arrested after attempting to sell three mines she did not own to the investors during a trip to Dubai. One of the mines, reportedly owned by her uncle President Emmerson Mnangagwa, was sold for US$1 million, while she allegedly received a deposit of US$500,000 for another mine.
This is not the first time Rushwaya has been involved in illegal activities. Last year, she was convicted for attempting to smuggle 6kgs of gold to Dubai. As a result, she was fined US$5,000 and given a suspended three-year jail sentence. Rushwaya’s involvement in these criminal activities has also been highlighted in Al Jazeera’s docu-series Gold Mafia, which exposed how Zimbabwe’s gold was being smuggled out of the country by senior public officials.
