Toya Delazy Claims 13-Year Radio Blackout, Alleges Industry Corruption

Toya Delazy Says She’s Been Shut Out of SA Radio for 13 Years

South African musician Toya Delazy has opened up about what she describes as more than a decade of being sidelined by the local music industry, claiming her new releases have been ignored by radio stations for 13 years.

In a series of candid social media posts, the Afro Rave musician — whose real name is Latoya Nontokozo Buthelezi — alleged that her decision to pursue independence came at a heavy professional cost.

Toya, the granddaughter of late Inkatha Freedom Party founder Mangosuthu Buthelezi, said her struggles began after she opted to go independent rather than remain tied to contractual agreements she later questioned.

“I still can’t get any new music on radio. It’s been over 13 years now. I’m an artist living in forced exile because I chose my independence,” she wrote.

The singer suggested that rejecting certain industry practices led to her music being sidelined by radio stations and her videos rejected by television platforms.

Allegations of Industry Exploitation

Without detailing her personal contractual disputes, Toya alleged that the South African music industry harbours deep-rooted corruption, comparing it to high-profile scandals that have rocked the United States entertainment sector.

She referenced past experiences of legendary singer Brenda Fassie, claiming the same executive who handled Fassie’s contract was also involved in hers.

Toya further alleged that after she refused to be exploited, corporations “ganged up” against her, effectively blocking her access to mainstream platforms.

Claims of Smear Campaigns

The singer said returning to South Africa is not currently an option, alleging that damaging narratives have been circulated about her, including claims that she abuses drugs and attempts to discredit her Afro Rave genre.

“I’m tired of being misunderstood. They have had their chance to paint me. The industry needs a shake-up,” she wrote, adding that individuals she accused of misconduct have since risen to senior positions within major record labels.

Podcast Platforms Also ‘Blocked’

Responding to a fan who suggested she speak out on the Engineer Your Life podcast, Toya claimed she has also been excluded from certain digital platforms.

According to the singer, podcasts affiliated with major industry players have allegedly refused to host her, though she expressed willingness to share her story on independent platforms.
