At least 30 people lost their lives while 104 others were injured in 337 road traffic accidents recorded across Zimbabwe during the recent Easter holiday period.
Police confirmed that 22 of the reported accidents were fatal. Although the total number of crashes declined compared to last year’s 384, the death toll increased from 24 to 30, raising fresh concerns over road safety.

Pedestrians account for majority of deaths
According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, pedestrians made up the largest share of fatalities.
Out of the 30 deaths, 19 were pedestrians, representing nearly two-thirds of the total. Passengers accounted for seven deaths, while three drivers and one motorcycle rider also lost their lives.
Authorities say the figures highlight the vulnerability of pedestrians on the country’s roads, especially during high-traffic holiday periods.
Tragic family crash among worst incidents
One of the most devastating accidents occurred just before the holiday, along the Harare–Masvingo Road, where six family members were killed in a head-on collision involving a Toyota Corolla and a truck.
The crash, which happened at the 246-kilometre peg, underscores the dangers associated with reckless driving and poor judgement on highways.
Speeding and risky overtaking blamed
Police identified speeding as the leading cause of accidents during the Easter period, with many drivers reportedly losing control of their vehicles.
Unsafe overtaking was also cited as a major contributor, particularly in incidents involving head-on collisions.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits and avoid dangerous driving practices.
No major public transport disasters recorded
Despite the rise in fatalities, police noted that there were no major accidents involving public service vehicles during the holiday.
This marks a positive development compared to previous years, where buses have often been involved in high-casualty crashes.
Law enforcement officials say they will continue to intensify road safety campaigns and enforcement measures to reduce accidents and save lives.
