Man Jailed For Public Assault On Girlfriend Over HIV Confrontation

Man Convicted After Violent HIV-Linked Dispute In Southlea Park

A man from Southlea Park in Harare has been jailed for assaulting his girlfriend after a confrontation over HIV, with the court handing down a custodial sentence following the violent incident.

A 38-year-old man will spend nine months behind bars after being convicted by the Mbare Magistrate’s Court. The sentence stems from an attack in which he repeatedly struck his 31-year-old girlfriend in public. The court initially imposed a 12-month prison term, before suspending three months for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Attack At Southlea Park Shops

The court heard that the incident occurred on 8 March 2026 at around 1000 hours at Southlea Park shops in Harare. The altercation reportedly began after the woman confronted the man over her HIV status.

Quoting from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the details of the assault were outlined:

“On the 8th of March 2026, around 1000 hours, the offender repeatedly punched his 31-year-old girlfriend in the face at the Southlea Park shops.”

The attack took place in a public setting, drawing attention to the severity of the incident. No further details were provided regarding whether bystanders intervened.

Medical Evidence Presented In Court

Following the assault, the victim was referred for medical examination. The results of that examination were later presented in court as part of the prosecution’s case.

The NPAZ confirmed:

“The woman was referred for medical examination following the attack and the results were used as evidence in court.”

The medical findings played a role in securing the conviction, although specific injuries sustained were not publicly detailed.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe emphasised the seriousness of physical abuse, regardless of circumstances.

In a statement, the authority said:

“Physical abuse for whatever reason is a very serious crime. The NPAZ will leave no stone unturned in ensuring perpetrators are brought to book and face the full wrath of the law.”
