Police Issue Stern Warning on Illegal Firearms Ahead of Independence Day
Zimbabwean police have stepped up security preparations ahead of this year’s Independence Day celebrations, rolling out intensified operations across the country to prevent crime and ensure public safety.
The measures include increased patrols, stop-and-search exercises and heightened surveillance, particularly in major cities where large crowds are expected to gather.
Illegal Firearms in the Spotlight
Authorities say the operation is partly driven by rising concern over the presence of unlicensed firearms in communities, which could pose a risk during national events.
Police have made it clear that individuals found in possession of illegal weapons will face immediate arrest and prosecution.
“No Room for Lawlessness”
Speaking to The Chronicle, National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to maintain order during the celebrations.
“We want to assure the nation that the Zimbabwe Republic Police is fully prepared to provide adequate security during the Independence Day celebrations,” he said.
He added that officers have already been deployed nationwide to ensure a visible and effective security presence.
Public Urged to Stay Alert
Police are calling on citizens to work closely with law enforcement by reporting suspicious behaviour, including individuals believed to be carrying firearms.
“Community cooperation is critical in ensuring that we have peaceful and incident-free celebrations,” Nyathi said.
Authorities believe public vigilance will play a key role in preventing potential incidents.
Focus Beyond Firearms
While illegal weapons remain a major concern, police say they will also monitor other offences such as disorderly conduct and substance abuse, which often increase during large gatherings.
Celebrate Responsibly
As the country marks one of its most important national holidays, citizens are being encouraged to celebrate responsibly and respect the law.
“There is no room for lawlessness, especially during such an important national occasion,” Nyathi said.
Police say they will remain on high alert throughout the holiday period to ensure the celebrations are peaceful and orderly.
