Marinica Resigns After Nearly Six Months As Warriors Coach
Zimbabwe’s senior men’s national team has been thrown into fresh uncertainty after Marian Marinica resigned as Warriors head coach, with the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirming his departure and swiftly naming Kaitano Tembo as interim boss ahead of a key international assignment.
The announcement was made on 27 April 2026, bringing an abrupt end to Marinica’s short stint, which began in November 2025 under intense public scrutiny.
ZIFA Confirms Sudden Exit
In a statement shared on X, the Zimbabwe Football Association confirmed the development and cited personal reasons behind the Romanian coach’s decision to step down.
ZIFA said:
“The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) announces that Marian Marinica has resigned from his position as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team, citing personal reasons.”
The association added:
“ZIFA has accepted his resignation and thanks Coach Marinica for his contribution to the Warriors. The Association wishes him well in his future endeavours.”
The resignation comes just months after his appointment in November 2025, a decision that sparked widespread debate among supporters and football stakeholders.
Tembo Steps In As Interim Coach
ZIFA confirmed that former Warriors player Kaitano Tembo will take charge on an interim basis, with immediate focus on upcoming international commitments.
The association stated:
“Kaitano Tembo has been appointed Interim Head Coach and will lead the team for the upcoming Unity Cup assignment in the United Kingdom.”
Tembo will be supported by Takesure Chiragwi, who has been named assistant coach.
“He will be assisted by Takesure Chiragwi, who has been appointed Assistant Coach.”
The Unity Cup assignment is expected to test the new technical setup, as the Warriors look to stabilise following the sudden leadership change.
A Controversial Tenure Comes To An End
Marinica’s appointment in late 2025 was met with strong reactions across Zimbabwe. His one-year contract and previous coaching record raised questions among fans and analysts alike.
At the time, concerns were voiced over his track record and the decision to appoint a foreign coach ahead of crucial competitions, including preparations linked to continental football.
Some supporters had openly questioned the move, while others called for patience and urged stakeholders to give the coach an opportunity to prove himself.
The debate also reignited long-standing discussions around the preference for foreign coaches versus local talent, with several voices advocating for Zimbabwean coaches to be given more opportunities at the highest level.
Despite the early criticism, there were also calls for unity and support for the national team, particularly with key fixtures on the horizon.
Marinica’s resignation now leaves those questions unresolved, with ZIFA once again tasked with finding a long-term solution for the Warriors.
His departure also means Zimbabwe will head into its next assignment under interim leadership, adding pressure on Tembo and his technical team to deliver results.
