Police Confirm Incident

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, and said investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire started after a gas cylinder detonated at a homestead.

Illegal Fuel Storage Suspected

Authorities believe the property was being used as an informal fuel retail point, where both petrol and gas were stored.

The combination of flammable substances is suspected to have contributed to the intensity of the explosion and the rapid spread of the fire.

Father Hospitalised with Severe Burns

The children’s father sustained serious burn injuries during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Mount Darwin Hospital.

His condition has not yet been publicly detailed.

Safety Warnings Issued

Following the tragedy, the Environmental Management Agency has urged the public to strictly follow regulations governing the storage and handling of hazardous materials.

Agency spokesperson Maxwell Mupotsa warned against keeping or selling dangerous substances in residential areas, saying such practices put lives at risk.

Call for Greater Compliance

Authorities say the incident highlights the dangers associated with improper storage of fuel and gas, particularly in informal settings.

They are urging communities to prioritise safety and comply with existing laws to prevent similar tragedies.
