How the Money Went Missing

According to court papers seen by The Herald, the incident occurred on April 25, 2026, at the central bank’s offices located along Samora Machel Avenue in Harare. The complainant, asset manager Benard Kenneth Chitenje, had secured his office before briefly leaving to purchase car parts along Kaguvi Street.

However, the office window had been left slightly open, creating an opportunity that the accused allegedly exploited.

Alleged Break-In and Theft

Prosecutors told the court that the 48-year-old employee, identified as Pets Napwaro, devised a plan to steal the money during his colleague’s absence. He allegedly used a chair to climb through the window and gain entry into the locked office.

Once inside, Napwaro is said to have taken US$1 500 that had been kept in a drawer before leaving the scene unnoticed.

Discovery and Police Investigation

Upon returning, Chitenje reportedly discovered that the cash was missing and promptly filed a report at Zimbabwe Republic Police Harare Central.

Investigations by the police led to Napwaro’s arrest, after which he allegedly confessed to the crime.

Court Appearance and Confession

Napwaro later appeared before a Harare magistrate, where he pleaded guilty to unlawful entry charges. The State, represented by prosecutor Takudzwa Mutyavaviri, told the court that the accused admitted to stealing the money.

He further revealed that he had gambled away the entire sum on an online betting platform, playing Aviator through a service identified as MWORS.

Gambling Habit Under Scrutiny

The case has once again drawn attention to the growing popularity of online betting games such as Aviator, which have seen many users risking significant sums of money in hopes of quick returns.
