Without a team, he continued sharpening his skills at Nida Sports Academy, a move that proved crucial. His performances there—and later at the 2026 Pirates Cup—caught the attention of Pirates scouts, ultimately leading to his recruitment into the club’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) squad.

According to his agent, Nimrod Mbhalati, Mtshali’s breakthrough was no accident. It was the result of a structured effort to expose unsigned talent to top clubs.
Mbhalati explained that a group of players had been training together in Soweto with the aim of securing professional opportunities. By aligning themselves with the Pirates Cup tournament during the Easter period, they created a platform for scouts to assess their abilities.
That exposure paid off, with Pirates officials identifying Mtshali as a standout prospect worthy of investment.
Why the Move Makes Sense
For Pirates, the decision fits into a broader philosophy. The club has increasingly relied on its reserve team as a stepping stone to the first team, with several players earning promotions in recent seasons.
Mbhalati believes this environment is ideal for Mtshali’s development. The agent pointed to the club’s track record of trusting young players and giving them a pathway to senior football as a key factor behind the move.
