Unpaid Salaries: Kaizer Chiefs Legend Quits Coaching Job In Zimbabwe

Former Willard Katsande has stepped down as head coach of Rangers Football Club. He ended his first coaching role after only two months in charge.

The club, previously known as Chinhoyi Rangers, plays in Zimbabwe’s Northern Region Division One League. It is based in Chinhoyi. The club unveiled Katsande in early March. He took charge before the league campaign began.

His appointment marked a key step in his transition from player to coach. Many expected his experience to inspire the squad and stabilise the club.

Katsande secured his Confederation of African Football coaching badge in mid-2025. He completed the course with former Warriors captain Tapuwa Kapini. Although new to top-level coaching, he had prepared through various football projects.

Challenges Behind the Scenes

However, challenges quickly disrupted his tenure. According to Soccer24 Zimbabwe, Katsande resigned due to several issues.

In his resignation letter, he stated, “the club had not honoured his agreed salary since his arrival.” This issue created serious financial strain.

Moreover, he highlighted poor living conditions. These conditions made his stay even more difficult off the pitch. As a result, these combined problems forced him to step down early.

Mixed Results and Future Path

On the pitch, results remained inconsistent. Katsande recorded one win, four draws, and two defeats. Consequently, Rangers dropped near the bottom of the table. They sat 18th, just above the relegation zone. His exit ends what many expected to be a promising coaching start.

Meanwhile, Katsande continues his work off the field. He runs the Kitoko Soccer School, where he mentors young players.

Previously, he served on the technical team at Crystal Lake FC. He also held an ambassadorial role at Sekhukhune United F.C..

During his playing career, he built a strong reputation at Kaizer Chiefs. He became a fan favourite and a dominant midfielder.

Ultimately, his Rangers role marked a new chapter on the touchline. The club had hoped his leadership would drive progress forward.
