National Sports Stadium Set for May 25 Reopening as Renovations Near Completion

The Zimbabwean government says refurbishment works at the National Sports Stadium are nearing completion, with authorities confident the facility will be ready to host football matches before the end of May.

Officials indicated that the stadium, which has been undergoing extensive upgrades, is on track to reopen for local fixtures starting on May 25.

Renovations Near Completion

Following a tour of the stadium, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Nicholas Moyo said the works are now in their final stages.

He told Members of Parliament and journalists that about 95% of requirements set by the Confederation of African Football have already been met, expressing confidence that the May 24 deadline will be achieved.

Moyo explained that the refurbishment programme has focused on ensuring the stadium can host domestic football again while easing pressure on Rufaro Stadium, which has been handling a heavy schedule of matches.

Focus on Compliance and Accessibility

Authorities are also working to ensure the stadium meets international standards set by both CAF and FIFA, a process known as homologation.

Among the upgrades are newly installed electronic turnstiles designed to scan tickets and provide real-time attendance data. Some access points are still being finalised, including a dedicated, user-friendly gate for people living with disabilities.

Moyo noted that previously condemned ablution facilities have been completely rebuilt, addressing one of the major concerns raised during earlier inspections.

Parliament Urges Speed

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport, Farai Jere welcomed the progress but called for urgency in completing the remaining work.

He said Parliament would continue to push for adherence to deadlines to ensure the reopening target is not missed.

Stadium Set for Limited Capacity Return

Once reopened, the stadium is expected to initially accommodate around 20,000 spectators, despite having a higher overall capacity once all phases are complete.

Officials say the first local match is scheduled for late May, marking a significant step in restoring Zimbabwe’s ability to host domestic and potentially international football at the iconic venue.
