Ouaddou Compares Pirates & Sundowns Race to Man City & Arsenal

Abdeslam Ouaddou says the Betway Premiership title race mirrors the English Premier League battle. He compared Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns to Manchester City and Arsenal.

Orlando Pirates pushed the title race into the final stretch. However, they still trail Sundowns by two points. Three matches remain this season.

The Buccaneers reached 62 points after beating Stellenbosch FC. That result set a new club record for a PSL campaign. Despite that achievement, Pirates remain second on the table.

Now, Pirates need three straight victories. They also need Sundowns to drop points. Their next challenge comes against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday night.

Ouaddou Praises Competitiveness in South African Football

Ouaddou believes the tight title race has increased excitement across the league.

“In every league, in every country, if you can look at the Premier League in England, Manchester City and Arsenal are fighting, I think it’s the same fight that we are seeing in South Africa,” Ouaddou told journalists.

“It creates a lot of interest for South African fans… if you know at the beginning of this season who is going to be champion, you lose interest.”

He praised his players for maintaining strong competition throughout the campaign.

“So, this season, we try to bring more competitiveness. I think the boys really did well.”

Pirates Refuse to Give Up on the Title

Ouaddou stressed that Pirates will keep fighting until the season ends.

“And I think it was really a good test today for us… So, for us, the dream is still here,” he continued.

“The players are going to fight… maybe people will know the champions on the last day,” the Moroccan added.

Meanwhile, Sundowns remain top of the Betway Premiership standings with two matches left. They will face Siwelele FC on Saturday, 9 May. Afterwards, they travel to Mbombela to play TS Galaxy.

Pirates continue chasing the leaders with three fixtures remaining. They first visit Magesi FC on Saturday, 9 May. Next, they host Durban City FC on Saturday, 16 May. Finally, they conclude the season against Orbit College on Saturday, 23 May.
