More than 2,000 pedestrians suffered injuries or died in hit-and-run accidents across Zimbabwe between January and March 2026.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that 2,081 pedestrians, including schoolchildren, became victims during the period.
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said motorists fled accident scenes without reporting the incidents.
Furthermore, he said the figures increased from 1,905 cases recorded during the same period last year.
“It is a requirement, in terms of the Road Traffic Act, that motorists who are involved in road traffic accidents stop, render assistance to the injured, and, where a person has died, follow due process. Motorists must also report to the police,” he said.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern the increase in cases where pedestrians are either killed or injured and motorists fail to stop or report the accidents.”
Police Urge Greater Road Safety
According to Comm Nyathi, most victims are schoolchildren and pedestrians crossing roads at zebra crossings and traffic lights.
In addition, many victims walk along pavements when accidents happen.
“We also continue to urge pedestrians to consider crossing roads at traffic lights if they are in the CBD and when it is safe to do so,” said Comm Nyathi.
Meanwhile, he urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid using headphones or mobile phones near roads.
He warned that distractions continue to contribute to road accidents.
