Zimbabwe Government Vows To Hunt Down “Social Media Terrorists”, Says Days Are Numbered For Online Mischief-Makers

Zimbabwe Cracks Down On “Social Media Terrorists”

Zimbabwe’s government has issued a strong warning to so-called “social media terrorists”, declaring that their “days are numbered” and promising to track them down.

“Guard against dangers of social media”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa used his keynote address during the 45th Independence Day celebrations in Nembudziya, Gokwe, on Friday 18 April 2025, to urge Zimbabweans to stay vigilant.

“All patriotic Zimbabweans are reminded of the need to guard against the dangers of social media, which is increasingly being used as a tool to cause discord and raise false alarms,” he said.

He commended Zimbabweans at home and abroad for resisting online manipulation.

“I commend you, my dear fellow compatriots, both at home and abroad, for remaining vigilant, patriotic and steadfast, never allowing ourselves to be misled by shadowy elements with dubious opportunistic agendas.”

The President stressed the importance of unity and national duty:

“Let’s remain united. We have the onus to work towards the success of Zimbabwe. Let us be remembered for contributing towards the country’s success and uniting its people.”

He warned that there are forces, both inside and outside Zimbabwe, aiming to derail national progress.

“Hand-in-hand, with focus and discipline, let us defend and work harder for the benefit of our motherland, Zimbabwe, now and in the future.”

Government hits out at “rogue elements”

Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, followed up on the President’s remarks with a direct message to those accused of inciting unrest online.

“The days for cyber terrorists are numbered, as we have more than the capacity to apprehend them; the long arm of the law will get them.”

He singled out rogue elements, including individuals like ex-war veteran Blessed Geza, for allegedly promoting unrest.

“While social media terrorists’ objective, as merchants of falsehoods, is to demonise the image and peace and tranquillity in Zimbabwe, we remain focused on national development.”

Dr Muswere also accused outside forces of sponsoring misinformation campaigns.

“We are aware of the dirty coins of silver that have exchanged hands and the desperation to continue fundraising through chasing mirages.”

Celebrations go ahead despite weather and threats

The Independence Day event in Gokwe went ahead successfully despite heavy rain and cold conditions.

“Despite the weather, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces graced the occasion,” Dr Muswere noted.

He said the decentralisation of national events, like this year’s Gokwe-based commemorations, reflects President Mnangagwa’s inclusive development strategy.

“The President’s focus is to bring all the Government machinery to all parts of the country, including the most marginalised areas.”

Dr Muswere emphasised that the government would not be distracted.

“While regime change cyber terrorists pray for doom and catastrophe, we pray for development.”

The government also pledged that infrastructure and development projects will continue beyond the celebrations, even in remote areas.
