Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court has rejected an application for live courtroom coverage of the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 case. The decision comes ahead of today’s highly anticipated hearing.
Sources Media Network had submitted an urgent request seeking permission to broadcast proceedings from inside the courtroom. The media organisation filed the application through its legal representatives, Atherstone & Cook.
The request related to a constitutional challenge involving Reuben Zulu, Godfrey “Zvabhendazvabhenda” Gurira, Shoorai Nyamangondo, Joseph Chinyangare, Digmore Ndiya and others. The respondents in the matter are President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Attorney General of Zimbabwe.
The case, registered under CCZ 8/26, has already generated widespread national attention.
Court Rejects Broadcasting Request
An official letter issued yesterday confirmed the court’s decision. The Judicial Service Commission stated that the Chief Justice considered the matter urgently.
Furthermore, the issue was discussed during a case management meeting held on the same day. The Chief Justice reviewed submissions from Sources Media Network and other parties involved.
However, the court ruled that the request failed to meet the required threshold. According to the letter, insufficient grounds existed to justify live courtroom coverage.
As a result, journalists and media organisations cannot livestream proceedings from inside the Constitutional Court.
Constitutional Debate Intensifies
Meanwhile, public interest surrounding the matter continues to grow. The legal challenge focuses on Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, which remains highly controversial.
Critics and supporters continue debating the proposed changes. Many view the amendment as carrying major implications for Zimbabwe’s constitutional framework.
Additionally, concerns have emerged regarding democratic governance and constitutional safeguards. Debate also continues around possible changes affecting term limits and other constitutional provisions.
Consequently, today’s hearing is expected to attract close attention across political and legal circles nationwide.
