Nkulumane Man Jailed After Spending Wife’s US$1 800 Savings

A 36-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after allegedly spending US$1 800 that his wife had entrusted him to keep.

Trymore Shoko appeared before the Western Commonage Magistrates Court where he was convicted of unreasonable disposal of matrimonial property after failing to return the money to his wife, Thembelihle Mercy Mabhena.

Wife Handed Over Money for Safekeeping

Prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu told the court that between December last year and May this year, Mabhena gave her husband different amounts of money for safekeeping.

The arrangement reportedly continued without problems until May 13, when Mabhena asked Shoko to return the cash.

However, he failed to hand over the money, prompting her to file a police report that led to his arrest.

Court Hands Down Suspended Sentence

Magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube sentenced Shoko to 12 months in prison.

Six months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.

The remaining six months were also suspended on condition that he repays the US$1 800 to his wife before July 17.

Repayment Deadline Looms

During sentencing, Magistrate Ncube stressed the importance of trust in marriage, warning against misuse of property entrusted by a spouse.

Shoko now faces the challenge of raising the money before the deadline or risk serving time in prison.
