National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragedy, saying authorities were still gathering information from the scene.
According to police, the bus was travelling from Chikombedzi to Masvingo when it struck a goods train at a rail-level crossing.
Emergency teams rushed to the scene to assist victims and transport the injured to hospital for treatment.
NRZ Points to Level Crossing Rules
The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) expressed condolences to the families affected by the crash and urged motorists to observe safety regulations at railway crossings.
NRZ Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Manager Andrew Kunambura said preliminary information indicated that the bus entered the crossing without complying with rules that require motorists to stop and check for approaching trains before proceeding.
The railway operator said seven adults and two minors were among those who died in the collision.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue operations continued throughout the morning as emergency personnel worked to assist survivors and clear the accident scene.
The 26 injured passengers were taken to hospital, where they were receiving medical attention.
Police and NRZ officials said further details would be released once investigations establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
Calls for Increased Vigilance
Following the tragedy, authorities renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution at railway crossings, warning that failure to observe safety procedures can lead to devastating consequences.
The latest accident is one of the deadliest rail-crossing incidents recorded in the country in recent years and has once again highlighted concerns over road safety at railway intersections.
