Masvingo Man Convicted After 21-Day Lodge Stay Ends in Unpaid US$1,110 Bill
A 22-year-old man from Rujeko C in Masvingo has been convicted after failing to settle a hotel bill amounting to US$1,110 following an extended stay at a local lodge.
Simbarashe Majeke was found guilty of leaving accommodation without payment when he appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Elizabeth Hanzi. He is currently in custody awaiting sentencing set for 23 June.
Three-Week Stay That Ended in Legal Trouble
Court proceedings revealed that Majeke checked into Amazing Villages Lodge on 18 May 2026, initially for what was intended to be a 21-day stay.
By the end of the booking period, his accommodation charges had accumulated to US$1,110.
Prosecutor Leyton Katsidzira told the court that while Majeke remained at the lodge throughout the agreed period, tensions began to rise as the payment deadline approached.
Laundry Excuse Raises Concerns
On 6 June, Majeke informed lodge security that he was taking his luggage outside for laundry, claiming the facility was experiencing delays in processing washing services.
His explanation prompted staff to alert management.
Although he later returned to the lodge, he did so without the items he had taken out, while continuing to stay at the premises for two more days.
Attempted Departure Stops Final Exit
The situation escalated on 8 June when Majeke reportedly tried to leave the lodge without settling his account.
He was intercepted by lodge manager Munashe Chikaka, who confronted him over the outstanding bill.
Court records show that Majeke offered to pay in instalments, but the proposal was rejected by the establishment.
Police were then called, and he was arrested at the scene as he attempted to depart.
Court Outcome Pending Sentencing
Majeke has since been convicted and remains in custody as the court prepares to pass sentence later this month.
