Husband Forgives Wife After Hot Cooking Oil Attack As Court Hands Down Surprise Sentence

A Bulawayo woman who scalded her husband with hot cooking oil after he decided to sleep on the floor following a misunderstanding has been sentenced to community service instead of serving time behind bars.

The complainant told the court he had forgiven his wife and preferred that she receive a fine rather than a custodial sentence.

Husband’s Forgiveness Influences Sentence

The incident happened on 9 May 2026 at about 2am, when Charles Ncube (31) moved from the bed to sleep on the floor after a disagreement with his wife, Edina Nyenda (32), of Luveve suburb in Bulawayo.

The matter was heard at the Western Commonage Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube. Nyenda was convicted of physical abuse.

The court sentenced her to 15 months’ imprisonment, with six months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining nine months were suspended on condition that she completes 315 hours of community service at Imbizo Primary School.

Testifying before the court, Charles Ncube said:

“I have forgiven my wife and I would prefer that she be fined rather than sent to prison.”

Court Hears How The Incident Happened

The State, represented by prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu, told the court that Nyenda became upset after her husband chose to sleep on the floor following the couple’s disagreement.

The prosecution said Nyenda then heated cooking oil and poured it onto her husband’s face and left arm.

According to The Chronicle, Charles Ncube sustained burns to his face and left arm before being rushed to hospital for treatment.

The publication reports that the matter was later reported to police, leading to Nyenda’s arrest and prosecution. (

The sentence means Nyenda will avoid imprisonment provided she complies with the conditions imposed by the court, including completing the 315 hours of community service.
