In an exciting development for internet connectivity, Starlink has officially launched its satellite internet service in Zimbabwe. As of Friday, 6 September 2024, just before midnight, Zimbabwe is now listed as “Available” on the Starlink coverage map. The activation comes shortly after neighbouring Botswana also went live with Starlink services.
High-Speed Internet for Zimbabwe
With the launch of Starlink, users in Zimbabwe can anticipate download speeds of up to 200Mbps, offering a substantial improvement over current local internet providers. Many Zimbabweans have been eagerly awaiting this launch, particularly those in rural and underserved areas where traditional internet services have been lacking.
Excitement has been building all week, with news circulating about the imminent activation of Starlink in the country. Zimbabweans are now looking forward to more affordable and reliable internet access.

Starlink Pricing Details for Zimbabwe
The Starlink website has now updated with the official pricing for Zimbabwe. Here’s a breakdown of what customers can expect to pay for hardware, services, and other associated costs:
1. Hardware: Standard Kit – US$350
The Standard Kit, priced at US$350, is designed for residential use. This basic package allows users to connect to Starlink’s satellite network from their homes. However, it’s still unclear whether Zimbabweans will receive Starlink’s Generation 2 or Generation 3 kits, as the website has not specified the version being shipped to the country.
The Residential Plan, expected to be the primary service package for users, is priced at US$50 per month. This package allows users to access Starlink from a fixed location, generally within a 3-5km radius.
Starlink will deliver the equipment to your specified address for a fee of US$23. To reserve your Starlink kit, a deposit of US$50 is required. This is an increase from the previous deposit of US$9, which was offered just a few days ago. Some early adopters reported deposits as high as US$99, but going forward, the total cost for the hardware, including the deposit, will amount to US$350.
2. Starlink Mini Kit
Interestingly, the Starlink website lists a “Starlink Mini” kit priced at US$200, although it’s not yet available. This model, which is significantly cheaper than the standard kit, could become a game-changer in the Zimbabwean market, especially when compared to existing offerings like Econet’s SmartBiz service.
Connecting to the services will cost $30 per month, which is relatively cheaper than existing services in Zimbabwe. The shipping and handling fees for this kit are set at $23.
2. Pricing in USD
Starlink has priced its services in US dollars, which is a strategic move considering Zimbabwe’s volatile local currency. This approach allows for a more stable pricing model without the need for constant adjustments due to currency fluctuations. Moreover, any potential increases in service fees would likely require regulatory approval.
How to Switch to Zimbabwe’s Cheaper Residential Package
If you own a Starlink kit purchased from another country, you may be able to switch to Zimbabwe’s new Residential Plan to take advantage of lower rates. Starlink offers a straightforward process for updating your subscription, which could be a helpful option for those roaming from other regions.
