Orlando Pirates hold key advantage in race for Thabang Matuludi over Sundowns

Thabang Matuludi could leave Polokwane City before the transfer window closes, with Orlando Pirates emerging as favourites for his signature.

The highly-rated right-back has also attracted interest from Mamelodi Sundowns. However, Pirates appear to be in a stronger position to secure the defender.

According to KickOff, Matuludi has entered the final year of his contract. As a result, Polokwane City are prepared to sell him now instead of risking a free transfer next season.

Orlando Pirates lead race for Matuludi

Polokwane City are reportedly considering offers from both Pirates and Sundowns as they decide the player’s future.

“The boss wants a little bit of space to choose the right offer for both the player and the club.

“He has agreed to sell the player and he is expected to leave the club,” a source told KickOff.

Meanwhile, Pirates could offer Matuludi the ideal platform to advance his career. The Soweto giants want to strengthen their right-back department ahead of the new campaign.

Deano van Rooyen and Kamohelo Sebelebele are currently Pirates’ main right-back options. However, Sebelebele can also operate further up the pitch. Consequently, Matuludi would have a genuine chance to compete for a starting place.

Sundowns face tougher competition for game time

In contrast, breaking into Sundowns’ starting line-up could prove more difficult.

Khuliso Mudau remains the club’s first-choice right-back. Therefore, Matuludi may struggle for consistent minutes unless Mudau leaves Chloorkop.

Although Sundowns can likely offer a bigger financial package, regular football could influence Matuludi’s decision.

For that reason, Orlando Pirates may represent the better sporting move if the 27-year-old prioritises playing time over salary.
