Orlando Pirates have invested in the future after reportedly securing teenage winger Edmilson Chaney from Hope FC. The Buccaneers also allowed Lonwabo Magugwana to join The Immortals as part of their partnership with the Motsepe Foundation Championship side.
Pirates land rising star before loan move
According to iDiski Times journalist Sinethemba Makonco, Orlando Pirates wrapped up Chaney’s signing before sending him back to Hope FC on loan for the season.
The talented winger began his football journey at the Cape Town Spurs academy. He later joined Hope FC ahead of the club’s inaugural 2025/26 campaign.
Known as “Millies,” the Bishop Lavis-born attacker wasted little time making headlines. He scored on his competitive debut in October 2025.
Afterwards, he quickly became one of South Africa’s most exciting young wide players. His speed, confidence and attacking flair stood out throughout the campaign.
The 19-year-old played a major role in Hope FC’s outstanding season. He helped the club lift the SAFA ABC Motsepe League Western Cape title.
Moreover, Chaney inspired Hope FC’s promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He also scored decisive goals against FC Ravens and NC Professionals during the national playoffs in Mthatha.
Buccaneers beat rivals to prized signature
Chaney’s outstanding performances reportedly attracted interest from several Betway Premiership clubs. Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu and TS Galaxy all monitored the winger.
However, Orlando Pirates moved fastest and won the race for his signature.
Meanwhile, his impressive displays earned him a preliminary call-up to the South Africa Under-20 squad. The selection comes ahead of the 2026 COSAFA Men’s Under-20 Championship.
The move highlights Orlando Pirates’ commitment to developing promising young talent. Chaney will now continue his progress at Hope FC before returning to fight for a place at the Buccaneers.
