Death Toll Hits 80 in Lake Kariba Ferry Disaster After Rescue Teams Recover Eight More Bodies
The death toll from the devastating Lake Kariba ferry disaster has risen to 80 after eight more bodies were recovered this morning.
The latest discoveries have increased the number of confirmed fatalities as search and recovery operations continue across the lake.
Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo confirmed the latest development during a briefing this afternoon.
“We have had a devastating tragedy in Kariba where several people have lost their lives.
“We have just received information on the recovery of eight other bodies, meaning we now have 80 deaths in the disaster,” she said.

Search operation continues
The latest recovery comes as teams remain deployed in the ongoing operation to locate victims of the ferry disaster.
The tragedy has drawn a coordinated response from Government departments and various organisations working alongside local communities.

Government praises rescue teams
Minister Chombo commended those who have participated in the response since the tragedy occurred.
She specifically acknowledged Government departments, the Zimbabwe National Army Boat Squadron and the Zimbabwe Republic Police Subaqua Unit.
Freelance divers have also joined the recovery operation, alongside business operators and residents from the Kariba community.
Chombo praised all those involved for their contribution and support during the difficult period.
The recovery effort is expected to continue as authorities work to account for those still missing and bring the operation to a conclusion.
