Case against teenager charged with Deveney Nel’s murder postponed for further investigations

The case against the teen charged with Deveney Nel’s murder in Caledon has been postponed to 16 October for further investigations.

The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named because of his age, made a brief appearance at the Caledon Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He’s accused of stabbing 16-year-old Nel to death a month ago.

Her body was found locked in a storeroom on the premises of Overberg High School during a sports derby day.

The Western Cape’s National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said: “There’s still some outstanding investigation that still needs to be done, which includes forensic investigation as well as cellphone and computer analysis. So, we will be coming back on 16 October.”

Communities in the Overberg District Municipality continue to rally around Nel’s family.

The media and supporters of Nel’s family were not allowed inside the courtroom to protect the identity of the alleged teen killer.

Community members arrived at the courthouse to show their support for Nel and her grieving family.

In a demonstration, before proceedings got underway, supporters lined the streets brandishing placards and chanting “justice for Deveney”.

Community activist Hein Wyngaard said residents of the region are still trying to come to terms with what happened on 16 August.

“For us as a little town in the Overberg, and also the fact that this happened on the school premises, distinguishes this from any other incident of murder that we’ve experienced over many years.”
